Mail Merge Tips and Guides

Mail merge is one of those things that most people just don't find enjoyable or want to spend time learning how to master. Here are a few tips that will hopefully make this necessary tool more bearable and eat up less of your time that it has in the past. Download the printable mail merge pdf for the full document.

Mail Merge Tips

  1. You may need to do research about your version of Word to learn more about mail merge specifics. When in doubt use a search engine; honestly, when it comes to mail merge, even the DonorSnap programmers have to Google it.
  2. User Defined Fields cannot have a space for mail merge to work -- "In Memory Of" or "Membership Expiration" has to read as "InMemoryOf" or "MembershipExpiration"
  3. The mail merge field cannot be changed just by typing over it -- you have to use the "edit" within mail merge to make the actual change.
