Try a Targeted Year End Ask:
Don’t pass on an easy way to target a missed opportunity

Believe it or not, there’s only a handful of weeks left in 2012… are you planning the ways that you can give a strong year end ask? Now is a great time to give mass emails a spin and send an email to 100 specifically targeted individuals.

Here’s what you need:

  1. A targeted query using DataMiner Platinum (Watch help videos)
  2. A free trial account with Constant Contact (good for up to 100 contacts)

Start by finding an opportunity that you may be missing out on.
Every organization is unique, but each of you has untouched opportunities waiting to be explored. Here are a few ideas to help get your brain thinking about opportunities that your organization may have:

  • Volunteers who have never made a donation
  • Members who have been involved in your organization for more than 5 years
  • The top 100 donors
  • Donors who have given $100-$500 so far this year
  • Donors who have made 2 or 3 donations so far this year

Whatever your target is, you can easily reach out to them without investing anything more than a little bit of time using a free trial account with Constant Contact. If you’d like to try it out with more than 100 contacts, you’ll need a subscription. If you’d like to use a different email marketing system such as MailChimp, just export your query and import it into your account.

Tips for targeting your appeal:
Since you are creating a very specific target, you should also create a very specific appeal.

Highlight how they have already been involved in your organization. If you are targeting volunteers who have never donated, thank them for their participation. If you target donors who have made two or three donations, you know they care about your mission. Don’t forget to acknowledge it.

Remind them why they care about your mission. Share some stories about the volunteer events and how they have made a difference. Include a picture of someone who has benefited from the volunteer work or donations that have been given. By letting your supporters know that their past time and money has been put to good use, you will encourage them to give again.

Ask for something specific. A blank proposal will get you a blank answer. Ask you supporters to give to a specific purpose and suggest an amount to go with it. Since you are targeting a specific group, the amount that you suggest can be very accurate to encourage giving a little more than they may have considered.

The key is all in the specifics. Take full advantage of your targeting in every way encourage your supporter to follow your call to action. Warning: once you see the difference it can make in your response, you might find your free trial turning into a tool that is essential to your communication with all types of supporters.
